Pig farming is an activity with a bright future but unknown to young people

Agricultural engineer Ángel López, from Copiso, highlighted at the PorciForum26 forum the lack of knowledge that young people have about pig farming. It is an attractive sector with a bright future, great interest, and excellent professional prospects, but it requires a lot of training and specialization, he emphasized. This opinion was shared by the other three young people who participated in the round table discussion “Who will take over? A conversation with the young voices of the sector.” They are Pol Arderiu, veterinary technician at Mazana; Neus Ferrer, veterinary technician at Grupo Jorge; and Mar Avilés, veterinary student, who shared their professional experiences.

Ángel López, head of logistics for the marking, transfer, and transport of pigs to slaughterhouses at Copiso, pointed out that “until you are inside, you don’t know the reality of the activity and the work in the sector.” This young agricultural engineer started working at the cooperative as part of his studies, “and I stayed.”

The PorciForum26 conference was held on March 4 and 5 at the La Llotja Conference Center in Lleida. This is a leading technical event for the pig sector, which addressed such important issues as the nutritional approach to animal welfare, pain management in sows and piglets, biosecurity, African swine fever, and how to attract and retain young professional talent (a debate in which Ángel López participated).
