Copiso has announced the use and utilization of sustainable energies during the ‘Week of Renewable Technology Transfer and Trainer Training,’ held at the Soria campus of the University of Valladolid (UVa). The event, held from May 12 to 16, is part of the European RES-SIAS project on energy and agriculture, promoted by the Erasmus+ program.
Carmen Yagüe, Head of Environment and Social Responsibility at Copiso, recalled that the cooperative currently has installed capacities of about 2,800 kilowatts in photovoltaic energy and about 950 in purithermia at its various facilities and farms. She also informed attendees that the cooperative uses biomass to generate the steam required for feed production and to meet other needs of the Valcorba industrial complex.
Carmen Yagüe explained Copiso’s circular economy model for agricultural and livestock activities, which includes the increasing use of sustainable energies. This use is framed within the cooperative’s “firm commitment” to environmental sustainability, making it a benchmark in the Spanish primary sector.
During the UVa sessions, topics such as biofuels and solar energy were discussed. Additionally, the energy utilization in agricultural activities or the pig sector was addressed. One of the visits was to the Sauquillo de Boñices farm to learn about the LIFE Smart Agromobility project, which is working on a new model for managing livestock manure for transformation into biofuel. The University of Valladolid is one of the partners in the project, in which Copiso collaborates (managing the pig production of the farm).
The RES-SIAS project aims to support the development and modernization of the agricultural and livestock sectors in areas such as gender inclusion or decarbonization (for which renewable energy technologies must be integrated). Six universities are participating in the European initiative: the University of Valladolid; the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Germany; the Santo Tomás University and the Catholic University of Maule, Chile; and the Technological University of Bolívar and Pontificia Javeriana University, Colombia.
